Panelists answered the following: Do you support the 247-megawatt solar project planned for Panoche Valley?
Mary Zanger: No. Considering the fact that we must wean ourselves from fossil fuels, solar panels are a giant step in the right direction. Unfortunately the power is not for us. Southern California Edison is the beneficiary. The seller/investor remains unknown. The terms of the deal are unknown. We cannot give away our resources and infrastructure, our road use, our land use, our water use, and power line use. They belong to the taxpayers and landowners. This project would be a better investment for our own selves in our own county for our own health and for our own financial benefit.
Jim West: Yes. The Panoche Valley solar project is exactly what San Benito County, the State of California and the U.S. need. Even opponents of the project agree that solar energy is a much needed answer—just don’t build it where I live! Ann Ross Yes. It’s a badge of honor for San Benito County to derive revenue and increase employment opportunities from the production of renewable energy.
Cesar Flores: YES! The project will certainly help bring jobs and money into San Benito County. The proposed alternative to move the project a few miles to the east, which will benefit Fresno County and leave SBC out, is not acceptable.
Nants Foley: I support the project. I love the yesteryear feel of pristine South County, but I do not believe it will be ruined by a project which creates jobs, adds to our tax base and produces badly needed renewable energy.Â
Ruth Erickson: We have been promised temporary and a few permanent jobs, taxes, education, and special attention to wildlife. We should have also negotiated for cheaper electric bills like other communities have to benefit us all in this county.
