County supervisors are expected Feb. 7 to receive a report regarding the possibility of a $5 million shortfall on the jail-expansion project.
Current estimates show that the project could have a budget shortfall around $5 million, according to a county staff report. Total estimated costs for the project around $20 million.
County Capital Program Manager Adam Goldstone said the scope of the project would expand the existing jail facilities to include items like 72 more beds, new program space, a new booking area and new medical offices.
“The requirements for what our sheriff’s office have to do with those in custody has changed a lot since the jail was originally built almost 25 years ago,” Goldstone said. “Needs have changed and this project will help fulfill some of the new goals and requirements.”
The jail expansion project report was due to go before supervisors at their Jan. 24 meeting, but was moved to Feb. 7 after a meeting related to the item was cancelled, Goldstone said.
County staff will present possible funding strategies at the Feb. 7 meeting. The staff report notes the project will be advertised for bidding “shortly” with bids due in April.
