Fire crews are working to put out a vegetation fire first reported around 2 p.m. Friday in the area of a vineyard near the wine trail and Hollister Hills.

Calfire and Hollister firefighters responded to the fire – which was focused in a field with brush but also burned some of a neighboring vineyard.

Initially, there were Calfire planes circling the area, but they were called off. Instead, ground crews worked to put out several acres of burning vegetation, while a helicopter dropped water on the blaze.

Workers from the adjacent Interface Aviation property, 9970 Cienega Road, watched as firefighters worked in the brush, some of it about seven feet high. There is a warehouse on the Interface property, but it didn’t appear to be in immediate danger and was about 100 yards from the largest patch of fire.

Other firefighters used tools to put out smaller patches on a trail that separates the vineyard from the open brush field to the west where the fire was focused.

It was unclear immediately how the fire started.
