Boys water polo

San Jose – The San Benito boys varsity water polo team finished with a 2-1 record in the Connolly Tournament at Bellarmine and Lynbrook high schools last weekend.

The Haybalers opened up with a 7-4 loss against Monta Vista in the first game.

The game was tied at 3-3 at the half, and Monta Vista had a 5-3 lead at the end of three.

Zach Bainter had two goals and Joel and Dave Smith had one each.

In the second game, San Benito defeated Lynbrook 17-7.

Both Bainter and Lucas Zepeda had their highest offensive outputs of the year with seven goals. The Smith brothers had one each, and James Schafer had one. Logan Kratzer played a strong 2-meter defense

In the final game against Cupertino, the score was tied 7-7 at the end of regulation. The game went into five overtime periods before Bainter ended the game with a lob shot from 10 meters out.

San Benito coach Tom Agan said it was the most extra periods he has seen in a game since he started coaching in 1990.

He said he was hoping to build some momentum from the win for the game against Live Oak today. The San Benito boys (12-10, 4-0 TCAL) will be at Live Oak for a battle of undefeated teams in league.

“There is still no doubt that if we are hot and they’re not, we’re going to beat them,” Agan said. “We got to be on top of our game. We know what we have to beat them. We just got to do that, but it is a tall order.”

The San Benito girls team will be hosting Live Oak at the same time.
