A teacher leads her transitional kindergarteners back to class after recess at R.O. Hardin Elementary School.

When a fire recently broke out in a Dumpster next to R.O. Hardin Elementary School, Custodian Juan Rios took action.
“At the time the fire was noticed, our custodian at the site took it upon himself to take two fire extinguishers from the front office and run around the fence and try to put out the fire himself,” said John Teliha, the district director of facilities, at Tuesday’s board of trustees meeting. “His efforts really did contain the fire long enough for the fire department to come up and put it out.”
Rios was presented with a certificate and received a standing ovation at the meeting.
