Delo’s Divots: Swinging from around the green, golf players
almost immediately choke down on the club toward the end of the
grip.
I will agree that the closer your hands are to the club head,
the more control you will have. However in golf, the one thing that
helps when you don’t grip the club down too far is leverage.

Grip the club about one inch from the top of the grip and your chip shots will fly a little higher and land a little softer. You won’t have that type of control by gripping the club low. Gripping it low makes the club shorter, and hitting the ball very low will cause the ball to roll a lot.

If you want the ball to roll more, gripping the club low is the way to do it. If not, if you want more control and height off the club face, grip it a little higher.
