State Sen. Jeff Denham, who represents San Benito County, announced today he will run for the Assembly’s 25th District and withdraw from the lieutenant governor’s race, according to a press release from his campaign.

Denham notes how he had discussed it over the past few days with his family, many leaders and colleagues before making the decision. Denham, R-Atwater, had announced his candidacy about a year ago for the lieutenant governor’s race as a Republican. He is scheduled to be termed out as a state senator next year.

“This decision was not easy or made lightly,” he said in the statement. “But our region and our state face great challenges in this tough economy and with Sacramento’s continuing budget crisis. … The people of California simply can’t afford even higher taxes or more irresponsible spending. As we’ve already seen, additional tax increases won’t solve the fiscal crisis but will only drive more jobs to other states.”

The statement notes how the senator has been endorsed by Assemblyman Tom Berryhill, the current representative for the 25th District.

“Jeff Denham is a tireless, effective and respected leader for our region in the Legislature,” Berryhill said in the statement. “He already knows and understands the issues that are important to this district. He will be an outstanding Member of the State Assembly. I strongly support Jeff’s candidacy for State Assembly.”
