Hollister – San Benito County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Hollister man for driving under the influence and evading arrest after a high-speed chase on city streets that reached upward of 80 mph early Saturday morning.

Noel Luna, 22, of 404 Powell Street, was arrested for driving under the influence, resisting arrest, felony evading police and a parole violation.

Deputies chased Luna after he allegedly missed a stop sign. The pursuit, down South Street, reached speeds of 85 mph, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Roy Iler. Deputies followed Luna to Beverly Street near Hillcrest where he lost control of his car. Luna then fled on foot into a nearby field, Iler said. Luna stopped running after deputies threatened to send in a K-9 unit.

During the chase Luna ran through several stop signs, Iler said. After Luna was taken into custody, deputies discovered he was intoxicated and on parole. Trying to run from police usually ends up making matters worse for any suspect, Iler said.

“You can’t outrun the radio,” he said. “Usually you’re not going to get away. Running just adds additional charges.”

Luna is being held at the San Benito County Jail in lieu of $13,000 bail.

He has been arrested nine times since 2004 for drug, weapon, burglary and speeding charges, according to jail officials. If convicted of felony evading police, he could face up to three years in prison.
