There are measures and candidates that represent changes in vision for not only the City of Hollister, but the entire county. We hope the local electorate comes out in big numbers. The numbers from the June primary were disheartening.
Some feel that recent low turnout is the result of voters being worn down by consistent negative campaigns. That a win-at-any-cost mentality has soured the process for many Americans.
We hope that is not the case. We wonder whether the people who react positively to negative messages vote in authoritative numbers.
But regardless of the number of voters who participate today, the importance of this election is undeniable. Measure R, if passed, would have a concrete result for Hollister voters – the local sales tax would increase. Measure S, if passed, would change the general plan, allowing a process that ultimately could result in a large development near the airport. City council and supervisor elections offer candidates of distinctly differing visions.
So vote. Have a say in the economic and philosophical vision of San Benito County’s future.
