Dear Editor,

As an admitted transit fanatic, normally arguments such as in your “Pacheco Pass Y mothballed again” editorial would have me fuming.

The fact is, though, I think you’re right.

First of all, I’ve driven through the Y many times, and this is a bottleneck and a hazard, and needs to be fixed.

Second, after looking into the history of the BART project, I’ve learned that there are alternatives – such as extending Caltrain to the East Bay – which would cost a fraction of what they want us to pay for BART – and that the VTA studied the option, found that it was practical and affordable but decided that BART was “sexier.”

It’s bad enough that San Jose wants to monopolize Measure A funds for itself – but intentionally choosing an outrageously expensive project when there are reasonably priced alternatives is adding insult to injury.

Now is the time for South Valley’s representatives to stand up and demand that transportation funds be spent fairly – and intelligently.
