The fire at the Eagle Recycling plant remains smoldering and is 90 percent contained as of 1:30 p.m., Calfire spokesman Jonathan Pangburn said.
The blaze that started around 5 p.m. Tuesday burned through a majority of the recyclables and nearly three-fourths of the commercial building on site. The fire caused damage to neighbors and started 24 separate spot fires in the area.
The main fire is gone but the building still is smoking.
Calfire has six firefighters and two engines still on scene, spraying down all the cardboard and material in the still smoke-filled building, Pangburn said. Firefighters expect to be there at least into Friday but perhaps longer.
“It’s still smoking but we can’t leave until it’s done,” Pangburn said. “We are not leaving until each and every piece of cardboard is hosed down.”
The business owner, Ernie Chambers, is moving the untouched recyclables to nearby plants in San Jose and Hollister to help clear the way for the firefighters and to keep his business running.
According to Calfire, Chambers has sent out at least three-dozen truckloads worth of materials as of Thursday.
“They are making progress, and we are making progress,” Pangburn said.
Investigators still don’t know what caused the fire.
