When will the Emmaus House – a battered women’s shelter in San Benito County – finally be open, our caller asked.

“It was completed a long time ago,” she said. “What’s happening with it?”

While the actual Emmaus House facility is completed, there are still some things that must be done before the doors can open to women in need, according to Nants Foley, who sits on the board of directors for the shelter

Things are, however, definitely moving forward, Foley added. Recently the shelter was granted an occupancy permit from Hollister, which is required for people to live in the house. And currently polices are being drafted for future employees, according to Foley. Once that’s done, the Emmaus House will advertise for employees and then train them, she said.

“As soon as we’re done training … the doors will be open,” Foley said. “We’re very confident that it will be open before the holiday season.”

Churchgoers Should Practice Safe Driving

Feel free to worship as you please, but when you’re leaving the church parking lot make sure to drive safely, a caller said this week.

Parishioners at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church on Fairview Road often put themselves in danger by making bad driving decisions, he said.

“I almost T-boned one of them the other day,” the caller said.

Initially, the church posted a sign calling for people to turn right when exiting the church parking lot on days with services. This didn’t work, our caller said, so to curtail the possibility of accidents the church began using cones to block people from turning left onto Fairview on church days.

Now, our concerned caller continued, people make the right hand turn, but then make dangerous U-turns to head in the other direction.

“There were people going left and almost getting T-boned. Now people go right and make a U-turn over by the dump and almost get T-boned,” he said. “They have a really bad problem. I guess they want to go to heaven real quick.”

Though the Crusader was unable to get a hold of church officials to discuss our caller’s concerns, we though it important that parishioners of St. Benedict’s Church be cautioned about getting back on the road following a service.

Anticipate Traffic

in Downtown

this Weekend

As bikers trickle into Hollister this weekend for the unofficial motorcycle rally, driving through downtown will take longer. So plan ahead or plan an alternate route. Also with seemingly countless cops in downtown, be sure to obey traffic, parking and seat belt laws, lest your weekend be ruined by a citation.
