A 51-year-old Hollister man refereeing a youth basketball game at San Benito High School on Monday evening called authorities and alleged a group of fans upset about something walked across the court and threatened to assault him.

Lt. Roy Iler of the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office said the man, a part-time referee for the youth league, told deputies an unspecified number of fans walked toward him on the court and that one of them said the following: “If you want to go outside, we’ll kick your (expletive).”

The group had left when deputies arrived at about 6:15 p.m. Monday, Iler said.

“He wasn’t struck or punched or anything like that,” Iler said.

He went on: “He didn’t want to go outside and be challenged to a fight outside.”

Iler said the report did not specify the number of fans who walked onto the court or why they were upset.
