Our first Red Phone caller of the week, a politically active
woman curious about local conservatives, asked the Crimson Crusader
if the San Benito County Republican Central Committee was still
active. Our caller also asked how she could get involved in the
group. The Crimson Crusader made a call to Reba Jones, vice chair
of the San Benito County Republican Central Committee, to get the
answer. Jones said the committee is still fighting the good fight
locally.
Our first Red Phone caller of the week, a politically active woman curious about local conservatives, asked the Crimson Crusader if the San Benito County Republican Central Committee was still active. Our caller also asked how she could get involved in the group. The Crimson Crusader made a call to Reba Jones, vice chair of the San Benito County Republican Central Committee, to get the answer. Jones said the committee is still fighting the good fight locally.

“We’re still as active as ever in San Benito County,” she said. “And we’re still holding monthly meetings.”

The Republican Central Committee meets on the first Wednesday of every month at the Great American Title building in Hollister. The meetings are at 7pm, Jones said. Registered Republican voters are welcome to join the central committee at any time, Jones said. For more information about the committee or the Republican Women’s Committee, call Jones at 638-0938.

Sticker Shock

Our second Red Phone caller of the week said he nearly fainted when he saw his most recent utility bill and asked the Crimson Crusader to find out if there was a mistake on his bill or if the increase was due to recent sewer rate hikes imposed by the Hollister City Council.

The Crimson Crusader made a call to Hollister Mayor Robert Scattini to find out. The rate increases, which are being used to fund the city’s $120 million sewer project, were adopted last Tuesday. Scattini said it was unlikely that local residents would already be receiving sewer bills with the new rates. Although it might not have been sewer rates that caused the increase on our caller’s utility bill, it may have been new water rates that went 9/12/06 into effect Aug. 1.

For more information on the rates or to get specific answers regarding the charges on a utility bill, contact the city’s Finance Department at (831) 636-4301.
