A fire this morning at a Hollister apartment building displaced 15 residents – one who jumped from a second-story window – in the 900 block of Nash Road.

The woman who escaped through the window suffered burns, smoke inhalation and other injuries, said Hollister Interim Fire Chief Fred Cheshire, who did not identify her. She and another woman were flown to Bay Area hospitals, Cheshire said.

The blaze resulted from an overloaded electrical circuit, he said. Damage to the Lado Del Rio apartment was estimated at more than $200,000, firefighters said.

The Hollister Fire Department, San Juan Bautista Fire Department, San Benito County Fire Department, and CalFire responded to the blaze at about 9:35 a.m. The blaze had spread into both levels of an apartment on the south end of the building.

In all, about 27 firefighters responded to the blaze, Cheshire said. The interim chief, who has headed the department for nearly a year, said he was pleased with the response and effort.

“We contained it to the one unit, but the unit was completely destroyed,” Cheshire said. “The interior crews did an amazing job containing it to that first building.”

Nash Road remained closed past 11 a.m.
