The nearly $4.7 million demolition and reconstruction of the downtown Hollister Fire Station will begin within a couple of weeks and is expected to be finished within a year.
The Redevelopment Agency board last week awarded a contract to Barry Swenson Builder for the demolition and reconstruction of Hollister Fire Station No. 1. The project is being funded by an RDA bond that is also slated to fund the West Gateway Beautification Project.
Hazardous materials abatement in the building, which was built in the 1930s as a tractor garage and converted to a single-story fire station in 1968, was completed after fire crews moved to a temporary station at the corner of Fourth and Monterey streets around the start of the year.
“We’re really excited it’s getting underway,” said Renee Perales, RDA projects coordinator.
The new station will be a two-story, 12,000-square-foot facility – double the space of its predecessor. The city’s contract with Barry Swenson calls for the work to be done within 365 days at a cost of just more than $4.2 million. A $427,000 contingency fund was approved in case change orders were needed, a common procedure designed to prevent the delay of a project when funding for unanticipated work is needed, Perales said.
Failure to complete the project within the year-long time frame will cost Swenson $1,000 per day.
The city received 17 bids for the demolition and construction project, with prices ranging from $4.3 million to $5.59 million. An engineer’s estimate for the project was $4.7 million.
