The San Juan Service Club will hold its fifth annual flower sale to raise money for its scholarship program Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Windmill Plaza parking lot, Highway 156 and The Alameda.
Each year, the Service Club awards scholarships worth $500 per year over four years to four San Benito County high school seniors.
“We’ve been doing this for a number of years now,” said club member Larry Cain. “If they maintain a B average over the four years (of college), they’ll get funding all the way through until they graduate.”
Besides good grades, the only other criteria is that the students must be graduates of San Juan Grammar School.
Last year’s flower sales were down from previous years, Cain said. The Service Club subsequently decided to cut back on the number of flowers ordered for this weekend’s sale, so shoppers should come early, he said.
“We only have about two truckloads being delivered,” Cain said. “We should do well with that.”
The event usually brings in $3,000 toward the scholarship program, which is not enough to cover a full year for all four students, Cain said.
“It costs $4,000 a year, so we have to have other fundraisers to make up the difference,” he said. “If a kid is going to school, we want to help them to stay there and to graduate.”
