The flyover ramp at the intersection of Highways 152 and 156 is nearing completion and should be opened to the public just in time for Labor Day weekend.
Drivers should expect some “significant” relief at one of the area’s most congested intersections once the flyover – the main piece in a larger, $34 million improvement project there – is opened as projected on Aug. 28, said VTA spokeswoman Bernice Alaniz.
VTA officials have planned for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Aug. 27 before opening the flyover section for traffic the following morning, Alaniz said.
The project includes the one-lane elevated flyover overpass for eastbound Highway 152 traffic, a ground-level connector ramp for eastbound Highway 152 traffic heading onto westbound Highway 156, roadway reconstruction and landscape restoration, according to the VTA’s project fact sheet.
“It’ll be an outstanding safety improvement and really just ease up traffic,” Alaniz said.
While VTA officials estimated a spring 2009 completion for the entire project, the spokeswoman said the agency is slightly ahead of that schedule. Once the flyover is done, construction crews still have some widening and safety improvement work to do, she said.
