Four people were injured in a violent accident on Monday that sent two cars tumbling down a steep 40-foot embankment at the intersection of Airline Highway and Bolado Road.
Investigators with the California Highway Patrol are still investigating the events that led to the collision that shut down Airline Highway for about 30 minutes after the 5:50 p.m. accident.
The names and ages of the people injured in the accident were not available from the CHP by press time this morning.
The accident happened when a Ford Mustang, carrying four people, was southbound on Airline Highway at an unknown rate of speed, the CHP said. As the driver approached the intersection of Bolado Road, a gray-colored Honda sedan pulled out of the entrance to the Bolado Park Golf Course and in front of the southbound Mustang, the CHP said.
The unidentified driver of the Mustang reportedly could not stop in time to avoid the accident and struck the front passenger’s side of the Honda.
“All I heard was the sound of tires screeching and this sickening sound of metal impact,” said an eyewitness, who asked not to be named.
The force of the impact sent the Honda careening to the eastern side of the highway where it rolled partially down a steep embankment, the CHP said.
The driver was ejected from the Honda which landed in a nearby tree, the CHP said.
The Mustang was deflected to the western side of the highway, teetering on the edge of the embankment for a moment until it slid over the edge and rolled down the embankment, witnesses said.
A woman in the car was reportedly ejected and landed at the bottom of the embankment, the CHP said.
The driver of the Honda, who emergency crews feared may have suffered a severe head injury, was taken to the Immaculate Conception Church in Tres Pinos where he was airlifted by helicopter to San Jose Medical Center.
Three of the people in the Mustang were taken by ambulance to Hazel Hawkins Hospital where they are being treated for unspecified injuries.
More information about the accident is expected to be released by the CHP later today.
