The Fresno Metropolitan Museum will present a special exhibition of American realist works titled “Edward Hopper and Urban Realism” Jan.18 through March 30.

The exhibition features a selection of early paintings and etchings by Edward Hopper, one of America’s most reknowned realist painters, along with the work of his contemporaries George Bellows, Robert Henri, John Sloan and others. Organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, all works are on loan from the Whitney’s permanent collection.

“This exhibition represents the creative talents of those early-20th century artists who created a uniquely American voice to parallel the phenomenal innovation and growth of the urban centers,” museum executive director Kathleen Monaghan said.

“The artists of this collection from the Whitney provided the genesis of the American art form.”

The exhibition presents the work of more than 30 artists who established realism in American art during the first part of the 20th century.
