A gang coordinator policy committee member said today that the committee has established a target day of May 18 to begin interviews for the coordinator position.
“It’s moving right along,” said Mike Sanchez, county office of education superintendent and gang coordinator policy committee member.
County Administrative Officer Susan Thompson said as of last week, there had been 45 applications. But not all of the applicants are necessarily qualified for the position.
“It looks like a good response, but we haven’t been screened for the position,” Thompson said. “We feel we are going to have a good candidate pool.”
The committee also began forming an oral board that will interview the candidates at the May 22 meeting.
“The discussion was centered around getting a representative from each agency on that board,” Sanchez said. “It’s a neat stage to be at because you can start getting to the fine points of what needs to happen.”
Also discussed at the meeting were some of the activities the coordinator will be doing once hired.
Thompson said one area the committee discussed is getting a common database. She added that this database will have notes on what the different agencies are seeing in terms of gang activity and individuals of interest.
“We all could have a better handle on what’s happening, who is doing it,” Thompson said. “Right now, we have a lot of street knowledge but we don’t have documentation.”
Sanchez said gathering information can help the grant application process.
“There was some conversation on what we want the person to gather as to where we stand as a community,” he said.
