An adult Gavilan College student has been diagnosed with the H1N1 swine flu virus.

According to a letter Gavilan President Steven Kinsella sent out to parents, students and staff, the student was last on campus July 9 and fell ill on July 11. Gavilan staff learned of the student’s diagnosis Thursday.

Gavilan staff reported the student, but the Santa Clara County Public Health Department did not order the college to close or cancel campus events, Kinsella wrote.

“Although it is unlikely that the virus is present in the facilities, as a precaution we have rescheduled classes and activities that normally occur in the room where the ill student’s class had met, so that it can be thoroughly cleaned,” Kinsella wrote. “Bathrooms and the cafeteria are cleaned and sanitized on a daily basis.”

Instructors were asked to read the letter to their classes, Gavilan spokeswoman Jan Bernstein Chargin wrote in an e-mail. She did not immediately return a phone call seeking further comment.

Earlier this month, Santa Clara County public health officials reported a total of 172 cases in the county, one of which was a 44-year-old woman with underlying health conditions who died from the virus.
