Gavilan College wants to grow with San Benito County, and the school will use two community meetings in July to learn how residents envision the future of the area.

With plans to invest millions of dollars into a new Hollister campus, Gavilan College will hold what it’s calling “Vision San Benito” meetings July 14 and July 28 at the Briggs Building downtown.

Through an 18-month process beginning in July, the college wants to learn what San Benito might look like in two decades, according to Gavilan College District Board Member Jaime De La Cruz.

“We want to make sure that we plan and we do our facilities according to planned growth,” De La Cruz said.

The first two meetings are intended for recruitment of residents to join an “Advisory Committee of Vision San Benito.”

Gavilan hopes residents represent an array of interests such as people involved with the arts, government, business and nonprofit organizations.

Gavilan plans to hold advisory committee meetings regularly thereafter for 18 months to draft a document that considers economic, environment and social prospects for the county.

Any county resident is invited to the meetings, which will take place from 6–8 p.m. at the site on the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets. Gavilan President Steve Kinsella is scheduled to facilitate the discussions, according to a press statement from the college.

“Gavilan College wants to know what the vision is for San Benito County,” De La Cruz said.
