The clubhouse at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.

Editor’s note: This week’s tip comes from Scott Krause, past Teacher of the Year with the Northern California PGA and one of the teaching professionals at Ridgemark Golf & Country Club.
One of the problems with large greens, such as those we have here at Ridgemark Golf & Country Club, is that even with a flag in the middle of the green we can still have a long putt or chip if we miss right or left. I want to talk about an option you have if your ball is just off the putting surface.
Most people will pull out their trusty pitching or sand wedges, put the ball in the back of their stance and hit down on the ball. The result too many times is sticking the club into the ground with the ball moving one or two feet. Chipping is as precise as putting, and without spending lots of hours working on it you won’t have the “feel” for distance control.
Here’s something that might help shave a few strokes off: The next time you are off the putting surface, say two to four feet, take a hybrid or a 5 metal and use it like a putter.
These are the benefits: With the loft of these clubs, the ball should carry in the air to the putting surface – when it hits, it will roll like a putter from there with no effect from the fringe.
Make sure the ball is forward of center in your stance. You can grip it like you would a putter or with your standard grip, whichever feels better. Remember to think putting, not chipping, as you approach this shot.
