Good putting hangs in balance
Good putting is a combination of balanced movements. Shoulders,
arms, hands and putter. One thing I will do with some of my
students is to find out with which arm they putt the best. I will
have them putt for a while with just the left and then with just
the right.

Good putting is a combination of balanced movements. Shoulders, arms, hands and putter. One thing I will do with some of my students is to find out with which arm they putt the best. I will have them putt for a while with just the left and then with just the right.
Once we have discovered which arm they are best with we begin to train the least talented arm. This will require practicing with that arm until it can putt equally as well. Good putting is a combination of good technique and a good attitude. Bad technique leads to bad putting and bad putting leads to a bad attitude, a vicious circle.
When you’re training your least talented arm start by gripping the putter so that you feel you can control the head with the least amount of grip pressure. Next start by stroking some balls to make sure you can roll the ball with this grip.
Keep in mind that the way you grip the putter with this hand gives you your best control and it will also work with both hands. Now get nine balls. Put three balls two feet from the hole, then three at four feet and three at six feet from the hole. Now putt the balls working down the line. The object is to make all nine balls. If you do move, back one foot farther with each group of balls.
After you have done this awhile do the same drill with both hands on the putter, you may find your putting is better balanced. If good putting required only one dominant hand on the putter then at least one PGA or LPGA professional would be doing it, right? So until we see one, let’s work on a good balanced putting stroke. Play well.
