Get a Grip
I don’t know if history knows who did this first but someone
did, and that someone is responsible for the beginning of power
golf. Granted, golf equipment has evolved plenty over the years and
that is part of the reason. But if someone didn’t do this we would
be learning to swing the club a different way. Any guesses yet?

I don’t know if history knows who did this first but someone did, and that someone is responsible for the beginning of power golf. Granted, golf equipment has evolved plenty over the years and that is part of the reason. But if someone didn’t do this we would be learning to swing the club a different way. Any guesses yet?

When they began playing golf on actual designed courses they were on the lands near the ocean. That meant that the climate was a very wet one most of the time. Then, as well as now, if you swung out of balance the chances of hitting a good shot consistently were pretty slim. And I am sure that happened for quite a while.

Then someone did something that gave a golfer a way to swing faster and stay in balance, that person took a pair of shoes and drove nails through the soles so that they stuck out the bottom and “invented” the first set of spikes. I don’t think we pay enough respect to that person. Just imagine swinging a driver while you are standing on a frozen lake in tennis shoes. The faster you swung the more you would lose balance. The slower you swung the better balance you would have but less distance on the ball.

If you don’t have a firm grip on the ground, you can’t use your legs, and without your legs, you are just swing your arms. So the next time you have a new set of spikes to put on, just say thanks, someone out there deserves it.

And don’t forget golf lesson are a gift that keeps on giving long after Christmas. Have any golf related questions? From rules to club fitting you can call me at 408-846-4531 or e-mail me at
