Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Salinas) stands with Hollister School District Superintendent Gary McIntire, Hollister Dual Language Academy Principal Monique Ruiz, San Benito County Superintendent Mike Sanchez, and two students at the HDLA campus.

Students at the Hollister Dual Language Academy will soon be playing flutes, clarinets and trombones purchased with $5,000 in grant funds.
The Barona Band of Mission Indians presented the check at the campus at 1 p.m. today in a ceremony attended by Assemblyman Luis Alejo and Hollister School District Superintendent Gary McIntire.
“The experiences that these students will gain from this access will help cultivate their minds so that they will be more successful in the future,” said Alejo, in a press release. “This grant will help provide the Hollister Dual Language Academy students the opportunity to use materials that they would not otherwise have access to.”
The group awards one grant for school materials to a campus in each legislative district in California. Since 2006, more than $2.3 million dollars has been donated to 474 schools across the state, according to a press release from Alejo’s office.
Schools must have the endorsement of a state legislator to be considered a candidate for the extra funding. Alejo represents the 30th district of the California State Assembly – which includes San Benito County – so he nominated the school for the grant.
