Hollister – While sheriff’s deputies arrested one man for firing a gun in a crowded apartment in San Juan Bautista Monday, Hollister police are still looking for a man who fired five shots into the air during a gang-related incident over the weekend.
Rafael Perez, 36, of San Juan Bautista, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, a felony, and two other gun-related charges after he fired some type of semi-automatic weapon in a small room full of people around 11pm Monday, said sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Chris Green. No one was injured during the incident, he said.
Green said Perez returned home to his apartment at 57 Muckelemi St. in San Juan, and started threatening his roommate while the two argued. As many as three other people were in the small apartment when Perez started waving a gun around and shot one round out of a window, Green said. Perez fled the area, but was picked up a couple hours later by Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies and returned to San Benito County, where he was booked into the county jail, Green said.
While Perez is still in custody, Hollister police are searching for a 20-year-old Hispanic male who fired five shots into the air Saturday night in the 200 block of Line Street, said police spokesman George Ramirez.
Police responded to a fight and the sound of gun shots around 10:30pm, but were unable to locate the person who fired the weapon, Ramirez said.
No one was hurt, but witnesses reported several people in the area were yelling “Norte.” The suspect, who was wearing a white shirt and had a bald head, fled in a light-colored SUV, Ramirez said.
Anyone with information should contact the Hollister Police Department at (831) 636-4330.
