Anzar High jumped to a big lead at the half then held on to edge visiting Soledad 4-3 in boys soccer Thursday.
The Hawks led 3-0 after the first 40 minutes, but the Aztecs came back to tie it.
Jose Ornelas took a penalty kick for the Hawks with approximately 10 minutes left in the match and Ornelas chipped in the game-winner.
The goal capped off an outstanding afternoon for Ornelas, who had a hat trick and assisted on the Hawks’ other goal, which was scored by Richie Perez. Perez had an assist, while Michael Weldon had two assists.
“We’ve played two respectable games in a row now,” said Hawks head coach Mick Brown. “I’m pretty happy.”
Brown feels first place King City is the class of the league.
“They’d be a great representative from our league at CCS,” said Brown.
The Hawks are 3-8 in the Mission Trail Athletic League and 3-10 overall. They travel to Greenfield on Friday.
Soledad is now 4-6-1 in the MTAL and 5-8-1 overall.
