Salinas – All good thing must come to end.

San Benito’s 27-game streak in nine non-tournament matches without losing has come to an end. Notre Dame won 21-25, 26-24, 17-25, 28-26, 11-15. Thursday to move into a tie for first place in the Tri-County Athletic League with the Haybalers.

“It probably aged me a few years,” said coach Jennifer Beall. “It was a good match, but we could have played a lot better. They forced us to do somethings we don’t normally do and vice versa.”

In the fourth game, San Benito (18-4, 3-1 TCAL) was down 20-16 but came back to win after Notre Dame ran out of subs. Beall called a time out, and the team rallied.

“I told them that we believed in them and they could still go out and win this match,” Beall said. “We blocked better than we have in a while. They stacked their block up toward our outside hitter.”

As a result, freshman middle Emily Kortsen had several big hits and had one of her best games this season, Beall said. Kortsen had five blocks and 10 kills and just one hitting error in 16 attempts.

Leslie Schipper and Alyssa Fowles both had 12 kills. JT Temperino had nine blocks and eight kills. Chelsea Fowles had 31 assists and seven digs. Alyssa Fowles led the way with 15 digs.

“It’s good to get in that situation now before the playoffs begin,” Beall said. “It is a good learning experience. Everything happens for a reason, and I think the kids can bounce back from it.”
