The Council of San Benito Governments plans to close the entrance to Highway 25 from San Felipe Road from 9 a.m. Tuesday until 4 p.m. Thursday.

COG Transportation Planning Manager Mary Dinkuhn said the closure will allow workers to continue construction of the new intersection between Highway 25 and San Felipe Road. Instead of turning left onto Highway 25, northbound San Felipe traffic will have to continue to Wright Road, turn left, then right on Highway 25.

Dinkuhn said she doesn’t expect the detour to have a serious effect on traffic, but she encouraged commuters to plan for a slightly longer drive.

“It’ll probably take a few extra minutes,” she said.

In addition to the northbound closure, southbound traffic on 25 will not be allowed to turn left onto northbound San Felipe Road, and will instead have to make a U-turn at Gateway Drive.

“I don’t think there are many people who make that turn,” Dinkuhn said.

COG would have to cancel the closure if rain halts construction, she added.

The detour will be the first caused by construction of the Highway 25 bypass, which began earlier this year. The bypass is scheduled to open in December 2008.

COG also plans to detour traffic from the intersection of Airline Highway and Sunnyslope Road later in 2008, Dinkuhn said.
