Hollister Heat 8U go undefeated at Summer Slamboree

The Hollister Heat 8U softball team went 5-0-1 at the Summer Slamboree in San Jose recently and took home the first-place trophy after it defeated the Spirit of Morgan Hill 9-0 in the championship final.

The round robin tournament, which was held on June 6-7, was the first of the season for the 8U Heat.

“They looked good. They looked real good,” Hollister manager Mike Moisa said. “It was kind of a surprise because we had three young girls that played rec ball but not travel ball, and we only had a couple of practices (beforehand).

“I was really surprised with how they came out and played. I was expecting to win a couple of games, but not go undefeated.”

Hollister’s Noel Chavarria opened the tournament with a home run en route to a 4-2 victory over the Benicia Outlaws, while the Heat followed that with a 7-0 shutout of the Rohnert Rebels.

In its third game on Saturday, the Heat downed the MT Dream 12-0 behind back-to-back homers from Chavarria and teammate Amanda Moisa.

On Sunday, Hollister continued its strong play when it defeated the Almaden Lightning 7-1, then tied the Campbell Crush 5-5. In its final game against Morgan Hill, Hollister’s Chavarria connected on her third home run of the tournament as the Heat silinced the Spirit 9-0.

Chavarria also led the Heat on the mound, striking out 29 batters in six games. Moisa also pitched her first game ever and did well along with Mylah Smiley, who struck out the final batter of the game against Morgan Hill.

The Heat will play next at a Fourth of July tournament in San Jose.
