Postal Problems

Red Phone was pleased to receive a comment about the landscaping at the Hollister Post Office via e-mail at

and even happier about the post office’s answer.

“It appears that the U.S. Post Office and/or the City of Hollister has no pride in their landscaping at the local facility. Weeds are growing out of control and it appears that no one cares about beautifying our local post office. Years ago at the old post office there was never a blade of grass out of place. Is there a civic group, the boy scouts, or 4-H group that could take this landscaping project on as their community service project? What does the post master have to say?”

It’s true, weeds are having their way with the Hollister Post Office, but not for long according to Kulwinder Singh, a postal supervisor. He said the post office has a new contract that should begin next week for a landscaper to keep the exterior appearance up to snuff.

“We have a contractor hired for the next year,” Singh said. “So that is in process. They’re going to start next week.”

But little other detail on the plan was available from Singh who said Red Phone needed to speak Postmaster Judy Danfield. Danfield was out of the office until Tuesday.

Red phone also asked about the new mail box that should be placed at the corner of Sixth and San Benito streets. After a caller asked about the corner, that used to have a mail box until the Redevelopment Agency installed new sidewalks, the Red Phone learned the post office box was scheduled to be installed soon. Singh said only Danfield could comment on the mail box.

“Actually, the postmaster knows about that,” he said. “We have the box in the office, but the postmaster knows the details.”

You will too, but not until next week. For now, both these issues are on hold while Red Phone learns more information.

The Red Phone runs weekly on Saturdays.
