Hollister – A Hollister girl survived a Wednesday evening crash on Panoche Road that ripped her convertible in half and sent her to the hospital.

Amanda Ross, 17, was flown by helicopter to San Jose Regional Medical Center where she remains with back and neck pain and a cut on her face, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Ross was driving a 2003 Ford Mustang westbound on Panoche Road about a half-mile east of Highway 25 when she drove off the roadway shortly before 8pm, the CHP said.

Investigators believe the car hit a raised mound of dirt, flew into the air and hit an oak tree at the bottom of a 40-foot embankment.

The impact ripped the car in half behind the front seats, the CHP said. Workers from nearby Blossom Hill Winery called 911. Ross unbuckled her seatbelt and got out of the car, officers said.

Officers closed Panoche Road for approximately two hours to recover the car, the CHP said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation, according to the CHP.
