Relay for Life of Hollister exceeded its fundraising goal for this year’s event, according to organizers.

Relay for Life of Hollister ran its 17th annual overnight fundraising event from July 29 to July 30 in San Benito High School’s stadium.

“This is the 17th year in a row that San Benito High School has allowed us to use their wonderful facilities,” said Logistics Chairperson Chuck Obeso-Bradley, who’s volunteered with the event for 16 years. “We could not be more grateful to the high school, the board of trustees and administration for supporting the event.”

Obeso-Bradley said Relay for Life of Hollister has raised more than $2 million in 17 years. The organization aimed to raise $100,000 this year. Donations are currently sitting at just over $120,000 thanks to 35 registered teams and 308 registered participants.

“We have teams that fundraise all year round,” Obeso-Bradley said. “It’s not like we did that just in two days, but it’s still pretty remarkable.”

The window for donations is still open online until Aug. 22.

“This whole event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society,” Obeso-Bradley said. “We’re really trying to do what we can to help give them more funds for research in finding a cure. But it’s also so impactful and healing for cancer survivors and their families.”

Out of the 308 registered participants, 99 are cancer survivors. Obeso-Bradley is one of them. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2007 and found new meaning in Relay for Life.

“We celebrate those who are fighting cancer, who are survivors,” he said. “We remember those who’ve lost their battle, and we fight back by raising awareness and funds to fight this terrible disease.”
