Despite controlling the lead at halftime, the Anzar boys basketball team could not outlast North Valley Baptist on Friday in San Juan Bautista, as the Hawks were outscored 28-19 in the latter half en route to a 47-40 defeat.

The loss drops Anzar to 0-5 on the year.

After falling behind 12-7 in the first quarter, the Hawks leapfrogged the visiting Bulldogs in the second quarter to grab a 21-19 lead at halftime.

But the lead wouldn’t last. North Valley Baptist, which is located in Santa Clara, played with the lead in the second half behind the play of Kyle Buruff, who deposited a game-high 21 points.

Meanwhile, Anzar was led by Nick Salgado’s 17 points, and teammate Jesse Ramirez added 12.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Monday night in San Juan Bautista to host Greenfield. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
