Greenfield outscores Anzar 19-5 in final period en route to
32-27 victory
GREENFIELD
Although ahead for much of the game, the Anzar boys basketball team could not close the door on host Greenfield in the fourth quarter on Tuesday night, as the Bruins came from behind to steal a 32-27 victory from the Hawks.
Anzar is now 2-11 overall on the season.
A lack of players may have been the difference in the game for the Hawks. Starting with just eight players, Anzar lost two players over the course of the game due to injury.
“We hung in there,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said. “But they just wore us down again. The positive thing is that we gave ourselves a chance to win.”
The Hawks led 10-5 after the first quarter and 17-9 at halftime. Behind Andres Gomez’s game-high 14 points, Anzar even took a 22-12 edge to the final period.
But with few substitutions, the Hawks compiled just five points in the fourth quarter, while Greenfield racked up 19.
“We had an opportunity,” Cecena said. “It kind of slipped away.”
Mark Rania scored eight points for the Hawks, while Bruin Abel Pacheco deposited a team-high 11 points for Greenfield. Teammates Edgar Moses and Jerry Gonzales each added seven points apiece.
Anzar will visit Lincoln in San Jose on Monday. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Hawks’ following matchup against Mountain View Academy, slated for Dec. 29, was canceled.
