Median barrier one topic being considered
A Highway 25 taskforce chaired by CHP Capt. Bob Davies will make a series of safety recommendations before the Council of Governments, including the construction of a median barrier on the road’s deadliest stretches.
“The taskforce looked over 25 different suggestions,” Davies said. “From that the task force boiled it down to four recommendations.”
COG’s executive director, George Lewis, said the basic question will be whether to spend millions on safety improvements when widening the highway could begin in as few as five years. COG may be asked to consider putting a median barrier on up to three miles of road, Lewis said.
Some of the improvements may include asking Christopher Ranch to start using Bloomfield Road as their only entrance and close down another entrance that runs along the railroad tracks to Highway 25, according to Lewis. Another improvement may include making the intersection at Highway 25 and Briggs Road into a right-turn only.
Caltrans will make a power-point presentation at the same meeting on building a $3.9 million median barrier on Highway 156 in San Juan Bautista, said Caltrans Spokesman Colin Jones.
Construction is supposed to begin in 2005. Caltrans will also discuss turning the section between Alameda Road and Union Mitchell Road into a no-passing zone and improving the highway signs.
The meeting will begin at 7p.m. Thursday and will be held inside the Board of Supervisors’ chambers at the corner of Fourth and West Streets.
