Fire displaces family

HOLLISTER – An early morning fire drove a San Benito County family of five from their mobile home in the 100 block of Barnheisel Road. The American Red Cross, Monterey-San Benito Counties Chapter is currently meeting the emergency disaster needs of the family after the fire destroyed the family’s mobile home at approximately 3 a.m. Tuesday morning. The Red Cross is providing the family with food and clothing and will be offering them follow up assistance in the coming days.

The family was awakened early Tuesday morning by their dog, a pit bull, named “Bocefus” who began barking when the fire started. The dog perished in the blaze. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The family; including two adults and three small boys ages 9,6, and 3, will be staying with neighbors in the meantime. They do not have insurance and lost everything in the fire.

Red Cross dispatched Disaster Action Team volunteer Craig Johnson of Hollister to meet with the family to meet their most basic needs.

“The family is just so thankful that no person was injured,” said Johnson. “My heart goes out to them, I don’t think the reality has set in quite yet.” He said. “Thankfully they are surrounded by family and friends and the Red Cross is there for them too.”
