HOLLISTER – Project Linus San Benito Chapter will hold a Make a Blanket day on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hollister United Methodist Church, 521 Monterey St.

The group will be collecting new hand-made washable blankets, yarn and monetary donations. All blankets are handmade by various local youth groups.

Project Linus gives security blankets to children in San Benito County who have been traumatized or who are seriously ill. For more information, call Sheron Johnson, chapter coordinator, at 637-2971.

Homework club opening at library

HOLLISTER – Students in grades first through sixth can register for a new Homework Club starting Tuesday, Oct. 9 at the San Benito County Free Library, 470 Fifth St. The club will be open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m., and participating students will receive homework assistance and learn to use the library’s resources. After one hour of homework, children can enjoy stories, crafts, games and special featured programs. This month’s special program will include Day of the Dead stories on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Library staff and volunteers will be on hand to provide assistance in a variety of areas, and Spanish-speaking staff will be available on most days. The Homework Club is limited to 20 students per session. For more information, call Wendy Kay or Esmeralda Casas at 636-4107.

Demos to meet

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Democratic Party will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. at the YMCA building, 339 Fifth St. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month and are open to the public. For more information, call 888-740-4432.

Field gleaning Saturday

SALINAS – Ag Against Hunger is looking for volunteers for a gleaning program Saturday, Oct. 6. Working with local growers, volunteers help collect marketable produce that has been left behind after commercial harvest. The food they collect is then transported to food banks and pantries in the tri-county area. Volunteers will meet in Salinas at 495 Brunken Ave. and leave at 9 a.m. to drive to the designated field. Including transportation, orientation and the actual harvesting of crops, volunteers should expect to commit around three hours (9 a.m.-noon) for the gleaning session. Transportation can be arranged for those without vehicles.

  Members of the local community are encouraged to sign up to volunteer as part of a group or individually. Participants should RSVP to Ag Against Hunger at 755-1480 or [email protected] by noon today.

  Ag Against Hunger is a nonprofit agency providing fresh donated produce to food banks in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties and throughout California. Since 1990, area growers and shippers have donated more than 135 million pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables to help feed the hungry.

Gang prevention presentation scheduled

HOLLISTER – Parents and community members are invited to attend a presentation about gang prevention Wed., Oct. 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St. The meeting will provide parents with tips and information about using parental authority to keep children from joining gangs.Youth and family prevention resources will be available for parents and community members who have been affected by gangs. Free childcare, refreshments and snacks will be available. The meeting is co-sponsored by The Hollister Gang Task Force Advisory Board and the League of United Latin American Citizens.

Parade applications available

HOLLISTER – Applications are now available for the sixth annual Hollister Veterans Day Parade, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 11 at noon in downtown Hollister. For more information, contact Richard Herrera at 801-7424 or via e-mail at [email protected].

Volunteers needed

HOLLISTER – Small Steps, a local nonprofit organization which provides jackets and shoes to children, is looking for volunteers to help with its annual shopping trip on Saturday, Nov. 3. The group’s goal is to take 375 local children pre-selected by their teachers to Target and Payless Shoe Source. Small Steps is looking for approximately 400 volunteers to be an adult shopper, register participants, work in the Kiddie Korral, help set up or clean up or serve refreshments.

Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and must pre-register so names, addresses and driver’s license numbers can be run through Megan’s Law.
