SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – This small town noted for its majestic mission and historic downtown district was named Thursday as one of the 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The National Trust said of San Juan, “Known as the ‘City of History’ because of its unparalleled collection of Spanish colonial architecture, San Juan Bautista showcases Old California like no other.”
Other cities making the list this year were Willmington, N.C., Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Red Wing, Minn., Portsmouth, N.H., Portland, Ore., Friday Harbor, Wash., Fort Davis, Texas, Crested Butte, Colo., Columbus, Miss., Apalachicola, Fla., and Aiken, S.C.
Kindergarten registration opens
HOLLISTER – Kindergarten registration for Hollister School District is set for Feb. 11-15.
In order to register, the district and state law require several documents to be submitted. Each student must have a certified copy of a birth certificate indicating the child will be 5 years old by Dec. 2, 2008; written proof of immunizations; including hepatitis B and a second measles vaccine; a Social Security card, if applicable; and proof of address in the form of a current utility bill.
Families are to register at the closest neighborhood school. If unable to register at listed times, families may call the school for an appointment or further information.

HHH scholarship offered
HOLLISTER – Applications for the 2008 Hazel Hawkins Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Awards are now available. Each year the Auxiliary awards scholarships to students who are pursuing a medical or medically oriented career. The total amount awarded to each recipient will be at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.
Auxiliary members put in thousands of hours throughout the year running a thrift shop, the hospital gift shop, and organizing their annual craft and antique faire in order to fund scholarships and purchase equipment for Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital.
Applicants must:
– Be high school graduates (or equivalent)
– Be residents of San Benito County for a minimum of one continuous year
– Be enrolled in health-related course of study at an accredited institution.
– Apply by April 11th 2008

Habitat board grows
HOLLISTER – San Benito County Habitat for Humanity recently added two new members to its board of directors. Johny Van Dyke of South County Housing and Lori McClelland, a local real estate agent, joined the Board in January. They join Habitat Board President Ray Pierce, Vice-President Niessa-Bauder Guaracha, Secretary Sandi Hollenbeck, Treasurer Kathy Flores, Past President George Lewis, and Members Brian Abbott, Peggy Pierce, Jennifer Galindo, David Huboi and Scott Fuller.
Habitat for Humanity will undertake its first housing rehabilitation projects this year, with plans for two or three qualifying homes to be repaired and rehabilitated. San Benito County Habitat for Humanity is also recognizing past board members who played such an important part in forming the organization and raising the funds to enable the rehabilitation projects to move forward. Past members include Cynthia Holthouse, Arthur Cantu, Mary Paxton, Lori Shackleton, Tina Tully and Sandi Slonaker.

Take a virtual foot tour of Hollister
HOLLISTER – CMAP and the Hollister Downtown Association, in cooperation with the San Benito County Historical Society, produced a half-hour documentary featuring historic buildings in downtown Hollister.
Narrated by HDA’s Sharlene Van Rooy and Hollister Planning Commissioner David Huboi, the video leads viewers through Hollister’s historic core area, detailing the history of significant buildings like the Porter house, Veterans Memorial Building, Masonic Lodge and the original Hazel Hawkins Hospital. The documentary features dozens of photos from the Historical Society’s archives.
“Historic Hollister: A Walking Tour” premieres on CMAP’s public access channel on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. Future airtimes can be found on CMAP’s Web site at www.mycmap.org.
Dems have new headquarters
HOLLISTER – The San Benito Democratic Party has opened a new headquarters at 910 Monterey St. in Hollister. The headquarters are open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In addition the group will be holding its Feb. 2008 meeting Thursday, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m. at the YMCA in downtown Hollister, 339 Fifth St. The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call 1-888-740-4432.
Old electronics raise money
HOLLISTER – Drop off old electronics such as computer monitors, faxes, copiers, televisions as well as household recyclables such as bottles, cans and plastics at Chamberlain’s Childrens Center, 1850 San Benito St. Goods will be collected Friday, Feb. 8 through Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Oriana to hold spring rehearsals
HOLLISTER – The Oriana Chorale will hold its first spring rehearsal on Monday, Feb. 11 at 7:15 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Free income tax service available
HOLLISTER – The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Tax-Aide program offers free personal tax counseling and preparation assistance to all taxpayers of low to middle income, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 12 through Thursday, April 10, volunteers will be available by appointment only to those who need help preparing their taxes. Appointments can be made on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. Appointments will be held at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St.
Participants should bring in all tax documents they receive in the mail, last year’s tax return and all relevant information on income and expenses. Nomination time for Baler Hall of Fame
HOLLISTER – The Baler Education Foundation is seeking nominations for the Baler Hall of Fame. Those selected will be recognized at an induction ceremony April 19 at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.
