Call for artists

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Arts Council has extended the deadline for applications to participate in the 2009 Open Studios Tour to Friday, Jan. 23. The tour is open to all San Benito County artists working in any media. Applications are available online at www.sanbenitoarts.org or by calling 636-2787. A $5 entry fee is required.

Stage Company holds Members Choice Awards

HOLLISTER – The San Benito Stage Company will host its annual member’s Choice Awards and a 10th anniversary celebration Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Granada Theater, 336 Fifth St. Complimentary refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program at 7 p.m. The public is invited to help honor those who made the 2008 productions possible as well as to celebrate the group’s first 10 years. Southside Nights

HOLLISTER – The Southside School Parents Club will be hosting a fundraiser for an all-weather track. Tickets are available at Postnet, Timber and Textiles, DL&G Printing and at Southside School for $45 a person. The event includes a no-host cocktail and drinks, dinner, silent and live auctions, plus music by the Moneyband. The no-host cocktail hour starts at 5 p.m., with dinner by Alvarez Catering served from 6:30-8 p.m., and a live auction from 8- 8:30 p.m. Music and dancing until midnight.

Survival seminar continues

HOLLISTER – The Challenging Times Survival Seminar series continues with workshops from Jan. 23 through Feb.10. All seminars are free to the public at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St., and start at 7 p.m.

The Jan. 23 seminar will continue to discuss family survival. The next set of seminars will discuss cooking and nutritional survival. The seminars include “Diseases of the Eye and Nutrition,” on Jan. 26, “Healhty New Year, Healthy New You” on Jan. 27 and “Myths and Truths About Real Food” on Jan. 30. Additional seminars on Feb. 6, 9, 10 will discuss the bible, prophecy and archeology.

Blood drive in SBC

HOLLISTER – The American Red Cross will be sponsoring a blood drive Thursday, Feb. 5 from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church Hall, 1670 Cienega Road, in Hollister.

Oriana Chorale rehearsals begin

HOLLISTER – The San Benito Oriana Chorale will hold its first spring rehearsal on Monday, Feb. 9 at 7:15 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The rehearsal will be conducted by Bruce Olstad, and the chorale will be singing American folk songs, spirituals and other pieces. For more information, call Jan at 638-9002.

Paint a chair to benefit HDA

HOLLISTER – The Hollister Downtown Association is seeking artists interested in painting a chair for the second annual Charming Chair event scheduled for April 4-18.

Chairs painted by artists will be submitted for a silent auction that takes place in front of participating businesses downtown. A few chairs will be available, or artists may use their own chair. Last year’s event raised $3,000, all of which went to the Downtown Endowment Fund to help revitalize downtown as the social and economic hub of the community.
