game this time around against visiting King City on Tuesday.
Although the Hawks lost 37-22, they lost 72-38 in the previous

The Anzar girls basketball team played a much better defensive game this time around against visiting King City on Tuesday.
Although the Hawks lost 37-22, they lost 72-38 in the previous matchup.
Anzar fell behind 16-5 in the first quarter. Natisha Marquez had eight of her 15 points in the quarter for King City.
Jessica Staley, who had six points for the Hawks, came in off the bench after having to sit because of a missed practice and did a good job containing Marquez in the post.
Erika Rodriquez had 10 points, including a pair of three pointers for the Hawks.
“It was a good game for us defensively,” said coach Paul Lerna. “We got a lot of shots off, but we couldn’t get them to fall.
In the second quarter, Anzar outscored King City 5-4 and kept it close in the second half.
Anzar (3-13, 2-13 MTAL) finishes up its season Saturday against Pacific Grove. The team has an extra incentive, because Lerna promised to shave his head if they win.
“We’ve been able to be competitive,” Lerna said. “We’ve had some close games. We have lost four in the last 30 seconds. Our starting lineup includes two freshmen, two juniors and a sophomore. But it gives us something to build upon for next year.”
Boys basketball
The Anzar boys basketball team lost 57-32 against visiting King City on Tuesday.
The Hawks had one of their best quarters of the year in the fourth, scoring 14 points.
“We executed some stuff on offense and were running a press that caused them to turn the ball over a little bit,” said Hawk coach Ed Cecena.
Sam Stewart led the Hawks with 11 points, and Adrian Monroy had seven.
Anzar got to the free-throw line 18 free times compared to King City’s eight.
“We did a good job penetrating to the basket and getting to the free-throw line,” Cecena said. “That is big because points have been hard for us to score this year.”
King City was up 21-13 at halftime after the score was tied at 13-13 in the second half.
The Hawks (1-16, 0-12 MTAL) were coming off their worst loss this year in a 67-16 match against Stevenson on Saturday. And Cecena was encouraged to rebound with a good outing.
“Going into the game against Stevenson, I though we had a chance to close the gap a little,” Cecena said. “But we just had one of those games where everyone plays awful. It was like taking two giant steps backward.”
The Hawks will close out their season against Pacific Grove on Saturday.
“They know they are far superior, so they will just play us straight,” Cecena said. “I like playing against Pacific Grove. Their coach has been there a long time and he is well respected. The kids are positive, and they are playing hard. I have seen a lot of improvement.”
