Dear Editor,
As I read the Monday Sept. 6 article “DA defends plea bargain spike” I just had to say thanks to both Kollin Kosmicki and John Sarsfield for clearing the air re: plea bargains vs. trials. This is exactly the point. If the voters and residents of this county are satisfied that less than 2 percent of the crimes going to court, then I’m way off on both my estimate of their collective intelligence and the call to recall the DA.
It seems to me that reasonable managers go to work, in this case go to court, when the chips are down and help is scarce. I can’t believe that this situation calls for the manager involved to continue to sit in his office and whine about the lack of help. Come on people of Hollister, can you see this situation getting any better? Mr. Sarsfield even handicaps himself by not allowing his most experienced assistant to prosecute felonies.
It’s also time to ask why would the DA start to investigate the New Idria case where he doesn’t have a clue as to who the criminals are, when he has 1,500 cases this year alone where the crime is known and the suspects are already known? That isn’t to say that the mine should be left to leak, just why now?
To Mr. Jim Hallum of Gilroy, since when has the lack of prosecution led to a city being a “safer and better place to live?” Our DA may be a nice guy and a good teacher for those students working on “mock trials,” but it does not follow that being a nice guy has anything to do with being an efficient office manager and lead prosecutor for San Benito County. His work ethic and leadership ability should be well evidenced, especially in the “lean years.”
We pay the DA well; let’s get our money’s worth. Recall John Sarsfield.
Robert Wilson, Hollister
