The House of Representatives approved a bill that would rename Pinnacles National Monument to a national park. The bill now heads to the Senate.

On behalf of the thousands of families who have for generations called Soledad their home, I take vehement objection to your characterization of our proud city (Editorial, March 7).
Soledad is both an historic and culturally vibrant community with much to offer visitors seeking to explore Pinnacles National Park. Together, we have taken many important steps to welcome visitors to the park and our burgeoning local wineries. And we have enjoyed huge local economic benefits as a result of capitalizing upon this unique opportunity.
If our economic development efforts are somehow a source of contention with opinion makers in San Benito County, my hope is that the focus of that contention remain where it belongs – on the county’s leadership – and not aimed at our proud city and its residents.
The city’s men and women work hard to provide for their families and contribute to the social fabric of our city, qualities which demand both our admiration and respect.
Mayor Fred Ledesma, City of Soledad
