America’s birthday celebrated by many

Dear Editor,

The 232nd birthday of the USA was celebrated by many enthusiastic local residents on July 4. The San Jose Mercury News wished all its readers “Happy Fourth of July” in patriotic colors in four languages on the front page.

Kids of all ages, babies to grandparents decked out in red, white and blue enjoyed participating in the annual Kiddie Parade led by Uncle Sam and and Betsy Ross with a Clydesdale horse and a Shetland pony bringing up the rear with their young riders. Two German shepherds dressed in patriotic T-shirts and bandanas walked with their owners while a visiting family from Germany was delighted to join in the festivities and walk as parade participants.

Bikes, trikes, buggies, scooters, electric Barbie Jeeps and more were decoratively adorned with stars and stripes, with all their owners waiving American flags. One father even videotaped a greeting from Uncle Sam and Betsy Ross for his children who were visiting on the East Coast.

Mayor Doug Emerson welcomed all the parade participants at the parade’s finishing place, Marguerite Maze School, before all were invited to enjoy punch and cookies.

You are invited to write on your 2009 calendar to remind you to come to next year’s parade on July 4. The parade has been growing over the past 15-plus years along with the evening, community fireworks show. Everyone is invited to attend, participate, help or all three! You have a year to plan!
