Nuclear energy has problems
Let’s let Einstein jump in, “Nuclear energy is a hell of a way to boil water!” Meaning that when enriched uranium rods are lowered into water, the boiled water turns into steam that turns the turbines of copper wires between magnets to initiate the flow of electrons, which we call electrical production.
Marvin Jones doesn’t mention that the mining, crushing and transporting of uranium by huge tractors, trucks and railroad cars poses an intense use of gasoline, diesel and oil more so than energy saved by a nuclear source. Marvin doesn’t mention that a private company will not build a nuclear plant because of the huge investment required. Private enterprise prefers that the taxpayers build the plants, but not reap the profits.
Marvin doesn’t mention the radioactive pollution produced by the nuclear industry. Many elements in the periodic table emerge as radioactive isotopes polluting our air. Most common are radioactive iodine, cesium, strontium and cadmium. In fact, the food supply of Europe is polluted by radioactivity from Chernobyl. Radioactivity is a well known cause of cancer. The time lapse between exposure and disease is commonly 10 years.
Marvin doesn’t mention the disposable problem of spent fuel rods. As of 2007, our country has 50,000 metric tons on hand with no place to go. Incidentally, nuclear energy is not renewable. Uranium is like oil. When it’s gone, it’s gone.
If I were to roll the dice, I’d rather through my chips with David Huboi and his green technology. Little wonder that plutonium, the ultimate enriched uranium aptly named after the god of death, surely matches the death association.

Stanford program costly for high-schooler
My name is Valentina Roveri and I am currently a junior at San Benito High School. For eight years now, my career goal has been to become a renowned doctor. To accomplish this goal, I have relentlessly persevered throughout my high school years, receiving a GPA no less than 4.0 and getting involved in club activities as well as community service and high school sports.
I was recently presented with an opportunity to take a step towards my dream when I applied and was accepted into the 2009 Stanford Summer Program. However, although I did receive a scholarship for $3,000, which I am extremely grateful for, the remaining tuition amounts to roughly $7,000. I live in a single-parent home, where my mother struggles to make ends meet. Also, I have a sister in college whose yearly tuition is about $25,000.
And so, I can only turn to the community for help. With time pressing down on us, I need to raise $7,000 in five weeks. No matter if it be $10 or even $1,000, every single donation counts and would be greatly appreciated.
Please feel free to contact Timothy Pipes, a counselor at San Benito High School, to verify any information at 637-5831 ext. 128. I can be contacted at 207-3697 or by e-mail at va********@ho*****.com for those interested in donating.
