See the new animal shelter
All Creatures Great and Small Rescue would like to express a
personal thank you to the City of Hollister, the Police Department
and Shelter staff for having the foresight to see the potential
benefits for the animals in our shelter of being open on
Saturdays.
We, the people, have long been asking for the change. The City
and the departments have listened. It is now up to us to support
their efforts. We need to make this work.
It is surprising how many people are still unaware of the new
facility. Now there is an opportunity to visit on Saturday
afternoons and take a tour from noon to 5 p.m. Support your local
shelter and rescues, adopt a homeless pet, become a friend of the
shelter and volunteer your time.

Money decides elections
I agree with Marvin Jones that our Constitution is shredded. I would add the remedy would be campaign finance reform, which also needs accomplishment here in our own community.
The problem is that our elected people become answerable to the source of campaign contributions. Locally, developers supply the money. Nationally, the lobbyists funded by corporate interests supply the money. A well-established fact is that the candidates with the most money win the elections.
Now just check the weekly figure in The Pinnacle front-page sidebar as to the cost of the Iraq War to San Benito County alone. If taxpayers are really concerned about the national debt, the trade imbalance, and the sinking dollar, why not consider bring the troops home and ending our wars and occupations? That alone would give health care and college education to every American. That truly becomes an investment in our country and would bring us into the community of advanced countries who do and prosper.

Democrats have it wrong
It seems that every time I write a letter to The Pinnacle criticizing Obama, it doesn’t get printed. I have read letter after letter bashing president Bush for the last eight years and am still reading them in your paper. I will continue to try to voice my opinion. I read the letter a couple of weeks ago calling the opinion from Marvin Jones regarding Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, a rant. Well, since when is it alright not to pay your taxes? I guess it’s ok if you’re a Democrat. And if you are a tax-cheating Democrat and you get caught you can always blame Bush. Or you can call it “just a hiccup,” as Harry Reid said. No wonder Democrats want higher taxes. They don’t pay them.
The letter goes on to mention Bush committing high crimes and misdemeanors, and that there was a failure of moral leadership. You blame Bush for the world hating us. Who cares if Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, North Korea, and France hate us. They were hating us long before Bush came around eight years ago. Short history lesson: Who was president when the Iran hostage incident occurred? Jimmy Carter. Who was president when the first World Trade Center was attacked? Bill Clinton. Who was president when the U.S.S. Cole was attacked? Bill Clinton. And who was president when the attack on 9/11 was planned? Bill Clinton. It just so happened that Bush was elected and it happened on his watch, he had only been in office six months. I don’t care what Leon Panetta thinks caused the world to hate us but it is not because some terrorists were waterboarded or not allowed to have cable TV or made to play basketball with balls that don’t bounce properly. These people hate us because we are free and have the greatest country in the world. Nothing we do will make them like us.
All you people out there will never admit that President Bush kept us safe for the past eight years at the cost of his popularity. He did the right thing. Will Obama put your safety before his popularity? I doubt it.
