Learn of war from the warriors
My fondest wish for new graduates is this. Never ever stop
learning! Now that I am looking back and considering my worst high
school class, there was a silly one. I thought it was absolutely
silly to study about gods and goddesses in a class called
mythology. And why on earth would any one believe in them,
especially these ancients with such advanced learning?
What I know now is that people believe in all sorts of
mythology. Moreover, TV, radio and movies allow mythology belief to
become widespread. This is especially true concerning myths of war,
honor, country and heroism, whereas the reality is completely
different.
Young people may imagine themselves resplendent in a uniform
with badges, bars, insignia and ribbons. To avoid the mythology
behind the uniform why not look at the truth? If you are reading
this on Friday, June 27, come and hear and see what two returning
veterans want to share with their community.
Mateo Rebecchi, whose mother teaches at Cerra Vista, with George
Sanchez, Purple Heart Iraq veteran, will share their stories with
us. Gathering will be at 7 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Hall at 1200
Fairview Road tonight, Friday the 27th. All are welcome to attend.
Of course this is absolutely free. Come and truly support the
troops. Support means a lot to them. Never stop learning.

Think about what we stand for

I was upset to see on the front page of the Pinnacle last week, of the first “same sex marriage” performed in San Benito County. Is that something to be proud off? Was that so important to make the front page? What is happening to the laws of God and the laws of this wonderful country that was established by our forefathers?

In March 2000 California voters approved a state law providing that “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” The California Supreme Court recently reversed this vote of the people. I want to know why? Who are they to reverse the voice of the people? I thought The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were set up for a reason. These two documents I thought were still in effect and freedom was still the designated term for the American people.

I sympathize with people who have other views and desires. That’s what makes our nation such a great nation – the ability to be different and to be able to live with one another. But, they need to sympathize with me also. We – the people of our nation – have set up a procedure for attacking issues that come before us. I believe that it is sometimes called the voice of the people. Isn’t that a beautiful thing? I believe that is called democracy. Isn’t that why our nation is so great? Whatever our reasons are for promoting our beliefs – moral, religious, selfish, financial, or whatever, once the issues are taken before the people – and the people speak, then I should comply (especially if the voice is of an overwhelming, majority vote).

It’s like a child who wants something and keeps on pestering the parent and finally the parent gives in. The child wins. If I have to, every four years, vote on something that has overwhelmingly been voted in, by the voice of the people, pretty soon I will stop listening and give in. Then, what kind of a nation will I have made for me and for my generations to come? (Don’t let the wagging tail control the dog.)

What good is our vote and than pass a law only to have a court come along and reverse the voice of the people?

I wish to express my disappointment in what is happening in this wonderful land of ours.

I think back during the struggle for Independence. Nearly 9,000 of the colonist forces were killed. Among those 56 patriots who had pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor by signing the Declaration of Independence, all paid a personal great price including nine who lost their lives through their actions . We know the signers of the sacred Declaration of Independence and the founding fathers, with George Washington at their head. They laid the foundation of the government you and I now enjoy and these men remained true and faithful to their God.

Andrew Jackson once said, that “no free government can stand without virtue in the people, and a lofty spirit of patriotism.” We need to turn our thoughts to the character of our country, so that we the people and our children and their children may thankfully say “Thank God my life has been spent in a land of liberty.”

I love this country with all my heart. I love what it stands for. But I fear a people that have power and forget what this country stands for.

Think about that!
