Democrats, Take Charge of the Situation in Iraq Now

Editor,

On May 9, President Bush presented to congress the “Security Presidential National Directive.” In the event of a catastrophic event such as a second Pearl Harbor, another 9/11, another whatever, the president would take total control of the administration, the Senate, the House the courts. All power and direction would be the president’s. It is surprising that the media did not pick up on this on May 9.

As of the last November election, the Democratic leadership in the nation’s capital has a mandate to bring our troops home. Democrats, you are no longer the minority party. If Bush continues to veto bringing the troops home, cut the funding for this disaster in Iraq. Do it!

Mosquito Abatement Would Be Good for All of SBC

Editor,

I was born and raised in San Benito County and have been in the ranching business for more years than I care to admit to. Being a conservative cattleman, I watch my nickels and dimes very close. Last week a friend of mine showed me a post card he received from the San Benito County Republican Committee telling people not to vote for the San Benito County Mosquito Abatement Program, no rhyme or reason, just vote “no.” Most people that are against something have reasons for their decision, not these guys, just vote “no” because we are telling you to. They are against any new taxes or programs

Now, being rather conservative, I kind of feel the same way about taxes and government spending, but in this instance I support the mosquito program because it comes down to being a public health issue.

This West Nile virus has been found in our county. This program would help prevent any human cases of the virus. I would hate to think that a little baby or elderly person would get this virus because I voted “no.” To me this assessment is real cheap health insurance for the people of San Benito County. For that reason, I recommend that property owners in San Benito County vote “yes” for mosquito control.

Oh by the way – I am a registered Republican.
